July opening for new Cardiff art museum
Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales has revealed that the country's new National Museum of Art is scheduled to open its doors to the public on 21 July.
Located at National Museum Cardiff, the attraction will allow Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales to exhibit its collection of artworks across a series of integrated galleries. The museum's West Wing will boast six new contemporary art galleries following the £6.5m scheme, having previously only had one gallery in which to display its collection.
Work at the attraction will provide nearly 800sq m (8,611sq ft) of space to exhibit Welsh art, with the opening exhibition to feature artists such as Josef Herman and Shani Rhys James. Cardiff-based Alwyn Jones Penseiri Architects are behind the design of the scheme, which has been delivered by OPCO Construction.
Faithful and Gould, Davis Langdon and Arup also comprised the project team that has worked on the National Museum of Art development. Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales director of learning Michael Tooby said: "The rebuilding and redisplay project will also be presented as an integrated display with its own identity for the first time, reflecting the way it transforms the awareness of the visual arts in Wales."
Director general David Anderson added: "For the first time, the nation has galleries of an international standard that tell the unique story of Welsh art and how the country had evolved."
