James Corner Field Operations to design Miami’s Underline
James Corner Field Operations (JCFO) has been picked to design the Miami Underline, a 10-mile corridor running below Miami-Dade’s Metrorail.
The Underline will be a linear park from Miami River to Dadeland South Station. The project will feature a cycle path/ pedestrian walkway and provide hundreds of acres of green space for public use.
Aiming to encourage healthy lifestyles, The Underline will provide an easily accessible place to exercise, create a mobility corridor, restore natural habitats, offer space for artistic expression, result in an uplift on investment in the area and have a significant economic impact.
From a shortlist of five finalists, including Perkins + Will, Stoss, Dlandstudio and Balmori Associates - JCFO have been awarded the $500,000 (€471,000 ,£338,400) design contract for The Underline.
JCFO are no strangers to designing large scale public projects. The company was one of the lead architecture firms for New York’s High Line – a resounding success for urban linear parks – and has been chosen to design San Francisco's Presidio Park, a 13 acre park next to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Designs and plans for the Underline are expected to be revealed in September 2015. The project will be funded by both the public and private sectors, with investment being actively sought. Funding the project so far are: the cities of Miami, Coral Gables, and South Miami; the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; the Miami Foundation; the Health Foundation of South Florida; and the Mitchell Wolfson Foundation.
