The Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti has died at the age of 92 after contracting the coronavirus disease COVID-19, it has been reported.

Gregotti was the architect behind the renovation of the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys when it was the centrepiece for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

He was also behind the renovation of the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, or Marassi Stadium, in Genoa, Italy, when it was used for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Other projects Gregotti worked on included the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon, the Arcimboldi Opera Theater in Milan and the masterplan for the Italian-themed Pujiang New Town in Shanghai.

Gregotti was born in the Italian city of Novara in 1927, studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan and founded his studio, Gregotti Associati, in 1974.

He also had stints as editor and editor-in-chief of Italian architecture magazine Casabella and worked on a number of other magazine titles.
