Internet will 'transform' the future of museums
Museums in the future are set to become increasingly more like multimedia organisations due to the long-term impact of the internet, according to British Museum director, Neil MacGregor.
MacGregor unveiled his vision for the future of museums along with Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota as part of an event celebrating the 60th anniversary of publishers Thames and Hudson at the London School of Economics (LSE). According to the Guardian newspaper, MacGregor said that institutions such as the British Museum are set to become more like publisher and broadcaster in future, while Serota added that there could be less staff working in attractions as the focus shifts to online material.
Serota said: "I am certain that in the next 10 to 15 years, there will be a limited number of people working in galleries, and more effectively working as commissioning editors working on material online. "In the past, there has been an imperfect communication between visitors and curators. The possibility for a greater level of communication between curators and visitors is the challenge now."
The Museum of the 21st Century was held in the Sheikh Zayed Theatre at the LSE's New Academic Building in Lincoln's Inn Fields, central London.
