Indigenous theme park attraction launched in Australia
Australia’s first dedicated indigenous theme park attraction has opened at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, offering visitors a unique insight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
Live wildlife exhibits ranging from kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles to tasmanian devils and tree kangaroos are on show in the Dreamworld Corroboree attraction, interpreted through an indigenous lens to highlight their relevance to Aboriginal culture.
It was created and developed over the course of 2013 by visitor experience company Earthstory and the interactive experience covers subjects such as totem culture and sacred creation, as well as the challenging issue of European colonisation.
The company conceived, wrote and produced the attraction in collaboration with indigenous consultants and Australian architectural firm In_Sites.
Earthstory also produced the panoramic film “Creation of the Gold Coast”, in conjunction with Aboriginal artist David Hudson, a dramatisation of the local Yugambeh creation story narrated by a 3D video storyteller.
Opened at the Ardent Leisure-owned Dreamworld on 12 December 2013, the project’s creators collaborated intensively with cultural experts to ensure accurate portrayals of the subject matter.
