Imperial War Museum appoints Foster and Partners for revamp
The Imperial War Museum has appointed an architect and project manager for its new master plan.
Foster + Partners was named as the architect and Drivers Jonas Deloitte has been commissioned to project manage the scheme, which involves revamping the Lambeth Road site - formerly the Bethlem Royal Hospital, or Bedlam.
The plan will aim to create a "more coherent visitor route and maximise revenue generation opportunities and provide a more efficient and sustainable infrastructure". The site’s internal space will be enhanced to provide new galleries and visitor service facilities.
Diane Lees, director-general of the museum, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing on board Foster + Partners and Drivers Jonas Deloitte. Both impressed us with their blend of energy and experience - qualities we believe are essential to the team working on such an important project.
“Our aim is to put audiences at the heart of everything the museum does, and we’re confident our new master planning partners will help us deliver this.”
It is hoped the plan will be approved by the museum in September. The museum will launch a fundraising appeal to pay for the scheme.
