IHG to open new Edinburgh property
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced that it is to open a new 192-bedroom property in Edinburgh, Scotland, after signing an agreement with developer Tiger Developments.
The 17-storey hotel will form part of the developer's plans for the £250m transformation of the city's Haymarket area, which has been called in by the government despite being given the green light by the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) in June 2008. BDL, which currently owns or operates ten IHG hotels, has also been appointed to operate the Edinburgh property, which has been licensed to Tiger Developments under a 20-year franchise agreement.
Kirk Kinsell, IHG president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "Over the next few years, Haymarket is going to become an increasingly popular destination. This new InterContinental hotel will be ideally placed to meet the needs of business and leisure travellers seeking world-class services and facilities." Edinburgh architects Richard Murphy, CDA and Sutherland Hussey are behind the designs of Tiger Development's vision for the Haymarket, which includes a boulevard lined with cafés and shops, as well as 342,000sq ft (31,773sq m) of office space.
