IDEA report uncovers 2011 fitness trends
The latest trend data from IDEA Health and Fitness Association has found that balance and functional resistance are among the most popular programming methods in 2011.
IDEA's 16th annual report into programming and equipment trends was released earlier this year and has been compiled using the views of a number of industry professionals.
In addition to balance and functional resistance training, the top 10 programming trends has also included mind-body programmes such as Pilates, yoga and tai chi.
Bodyweight leverage training; personal training, two clients share; stretching and flexibility; personal training, three-to-five clients share; and group exercise also featured in the top 10.
Meanwhile, balance and bodyweight leverage equipment were the top two trends identified in terms of equipment, with foam rollers and small balls and kettle bells close behind.
Top 12 equipment trends for 2011 also included stability balls; computer workout training; fitness assessment equipment; medicine balls; and yoga mats and equipment.
IDEA executive director Kathie Davis said: "It's pretty clear from the front-line program directors that they see things trending even more strongly toward more functional, life-enhancing types of training and equipment.
"Given the millions of Baby Boomers who are ageing into active seniors, training is all about balance and function. Boomers exercise to live life more fully, and I think we're going to see that continue to grow."
