Hampstead Theatre opens
The first stand-alone producing theatre to be built in London for over a quarter of a century, has opened in Hampstead.
The £15.7m Hampstead Theatre is four times larger than its predecessor and has been funded by a £9.86m National Lottery grant and £4.1m in partnership funding.
Architects for the project, Bennets Associates, say the transparent structure housing an elliptical auditorium enclosed by a zinc drum, was the most complex and sophisticated building the practice had ever designed.
The auditorium's seating can be altered to accommodate audiences sizes of 140 up to 325 and other facilities include an education studio for young people and the local community, a rehearsal room, workshop area and offices.
A café bar, open throughout the day and evening for theatre-goers and the public, leads onto a terrace which will eventually overlook a new park designed by Gustafson Porter.
Energy efficient, the theatre has wooden window shutters controlled by thermostatic switching to help regulate temperature by reducing the need for airconditioning in summer and excessive heating in the winter. Details: www.hampstead-theatre.co.uk
