Hackney Empire continues work-based training project for local community
Hackney Empire in London is set to continue its vocational training programme for local residents this year thanks to a second round of funding from Deutsche Bank to the tune of £47,000.
The scheme, which was launched in June 2005, offers work-based training covering all aspects of the theatre business.
Last year 78 young people from Hackney and East London took part in the programme and at least 75 trainees are expected to benefit from this year’s course, which has an increased number of modules; including front of house, box office, stage door keeping, bars management, fire marshalling, security, door supervision, staff and people management, technical and stage management, training for trainers, customer care, first aid, food hygiene and health and safety.
The average age of the participants is 19 years old and many of those who took part last year now have supervisory and management roles within Hackney Empire, while others have found permanent positions in other organisations.
Hackney Empire chief executive Simon Thomsett said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Deutsche Bank has agreed to support this programme for a second year.
“The scheme has a real impact on employment opportunities in the Hackney area and, as a local employer, we’ve benefited from the opportunity to take on new, enthusiastic staff and provide them with quality skills and training.”
Kate Cavelle, director of corporate social responsibility for Deutsche Bank in the UK added: "Through training and on-the-job learning, The Hackney Empire has created sustainable careers within the service industry for a skilled and highly-employable workforce drawn from the local communities.
“Our relationship has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months and we are delighted to be working with the Hackney Empire for another year.”
A spokesperson for Hackney Empire said the institution was working with partners to get the course accredited.
