The Gröna Lund theme park in Stockholm, Sweden has reopened its doors 10 days after a guest died and nine other were injured in an incident involving the park's Jetline rollercoaster.

One of the trains on Jetline – a ride which reaches a height of 30m (90ft) and a speed of 90km/h (55mph) – came partly off the rails, with three people reportedly falling out. One of the three who fell died, while two others were seriously injured.

In the aftermath, Gröna Lund officials said the Jetline ride would remain closed for the rest of the season.

The rollercoaster and the circumstances around the incident are being investigated by the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (Statens Haverikommission), which said the inquiry will take between 10 and 12 months.

Following its reopening on 5 July, the park owner said in a statement: "We are devastated by this terrible accident and it must never happen again.

"For us, the safety of our visitors and staff is of the utmost importance.

"We're now open for guests. In the time leading up to the reopening, we have carried out extra checks on all of our attractions. In addition, we've invited external, independent inspection engineers to carry out extra inspections on 17 of our attractions."

Jetline is a steel coaster which first opened at Gröna Lund in 1988. Originally built by Zierer and BHS it was modified in 1997 by Maurer Söhne to have a longer and steeper drop.

There are seven cars per train, with riders sitting two-across in a single row in each for a capacity of 14 riders per train.

The death is the latest in a series of tragedies at theme parks:

Orlando Freefall Tower

In March 2022, 14-year-old Tyre Sampson fell to his death from The Orlando Freefall Tower after slipping out of his harness and falling approximately 400ft.

The ride had a weight limit of 287lb, while Tyler, who was 6ft, weighed 383lb.

CNN reports that faults with his harness, including operational issues, led to his death.

The ride has been demolished.

Klotti Wildlife and Leisure ParkA 57 year old woman died in a rollercoaster accident at the Klotti Wildlife and Leisure Park in Klotten Germany, on 9 August 2022 after she was thrown from her seat and fell 26ft (8m) onto track.

Ocean Beach Amusement Park

A 52-year-old man died of head injuries in a workplace accident at the Ocean Beach park South Shields, UK, on 26 April 2023 while carrying out daily testing and maintenance.

The tragedy happened at ground level on an amusement ride before it was open to the public.

Legoland DeutchlandTwo rollercoaster cars crashed into each other on the Fire Dragon rollercoaster at Merlin's Legoland Deutchland 11 August 2022, injuring 31 of 38 people on the ride. Fourteen people were taken to hospital.

In an incident reminiscent of the Smiler ride tragedy at Merlin's Alton Towers park in June 2015, one train braked heavily and another train crashed into it.

Helicopters ferried the injured to hospital, supported by fire and rescue services. The park confirmed that they were all released later that day.

The Smiler tragedy incolved four people being seriously injured when two rollercoaster carriages collided on 2 June 2015. Merlin was fined £5m as a result.

The ride had experienced a number of issues leading up to the crash, including pieces falling off it, however, the accident was eventually attributed to human error.

Smiler had been designed to 'mess with the mind'.

Dreamworld, Gold Coast

Ardent Leisure paid out a further Aus$2.15m in damages in December 2022 in relation to an accident at the Dreamworld theme park in Queensland in 2016 when four people – Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, Luke Dorsett and Roozi Araghi – died when a water pump failed and caused the rapids raft they were in to overturn on the Thunder River Rapids ride.

The payment takes the total compensation claims paid to families of the victims to over AUS$5m.

The company was also fined AUS$3.6m in 2020 for breaches of the Work, Health and Safety Act. The inquest was told that Dreamworld rides could break down anything up to 20 times a day on busy days and that the same accident had occurred two years before without fatalities and nothing had been done to update the ride.
