Government halts forestry sell-off plans
Plans for the future management of England's Public Forest Estate, which had included the sale of some areas of woodland, have been scrapped by the government.
Environment secretary Caroline Spelman confirmed that a consultation into the plans was to be halted and forestry clauses in the Public Bodies Bill would be removed. An independent panel of experts is to be established in order to review government forestry policy and is due to report back to Spelman in the autumn.
Spelman said: "The forestry clauses in the Public Bodies Bill, published well before we launched the consultation, gave the wrong impression as to the government's intentions. "I am sorry, we got this one wrong, but we have listened to people's concerns."
Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, said: "We welcome the opportunity for a more considered approach to the future of our much loved woodlands."
