Glasgow University to open £10m sports facility in October
University of Glasgow is to launch its new £10m sports and fitness hub in October as part of plans to establish itself as a leading university for sport in the UK.
The new facility will have a heavy emphasis on sports performance and will have four separate operations – a 722sq m strength and conditioning facility called PowerPlay; a 732sq m cardiovascular and conditioning are called Pulse; a 661sq m sports hall; and a FanZone for students, members and athletes.
According to Euan Smith, director for University of Glasgow Sport – which will operate the facility – the new facility will look to cater for elite athletes as well as provide students and the public with a premium facility.
“The extension to our indoor sport facilities is indicative of our commitment to providing a world class learning environment for our students, staff and wider University community,” Smith said. “Our new facility will be one of the best of its kind in the UK.”
PowerPlay will include 12 professional grade Olympic power racks and lifting platforms supplied by Elite Sport Performance Technologies (ESP). It will also include ESP’s ground reaction force plate system Strengthsense, incorporating the camera diagnostic system Eliteform, allowing users to gain instant feedback and maximise performance.
Other suppliers within PowerPlay include Pullum Sports (Eleiko competition plates and an Eleiko competition bar) and Matrix Fitness (resistance machines).
Pulse will feature treadmills, bikes, stair climbers, elliptical cross trainers and flex-striders supplied by Life Fitness and resistance machines by Matrix. There will also be Concept II rowers, indoor bikes and stretching zones.
The indoor sports hall will accommodate badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball athletes and teams as well as providing new activity space for recreational use.
The Fanzone is a dedicated space for students, staff and alumni to come and support athletes and teams as they represent the university.
