HBO creates Game of Thrones Hall of Faces installation at SXSW
HBO has once again promoted the upcoming season of Game of Thrones with a temporary visitor attraction, this time making a recreation of the Hall of Faces at South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.
Open to the public between 11 March and 14 March, thousands came through the space, which featured a host of Game of Thrones signature sounds, sights and even tastes.
The main feature was the Hall of Faces, which comprised six towers utilising LED television screens to portray the key location in the last season’s Game of Thrones. Upon entry, visitors had their photo taken using iPad stations and a custom app. The app then rendered their face, adding them to the Hall of Faces, displaying them on one of the towers.
Fans of the show were also given a very unique sneak peek at season six, using special hologram technology to show a 30 second preview of what’s to come by looking through Melisandre’s Flames, which in the show predicts the future.
For fans predicting what will happen next this season, they could say who they thought would join the The Hall of Faces – which shows only the faces of the dead – using the online hashtag #SpeakTheNames. Those tweets were then displayed on a screen within a custom fountain themed on the Many-Faced God – a deity worshipped in the show by the mysterious Faceless Men.
As part of the temporary installation, fans could also pose with Needle – Arya’s actual sword from the show – and could sit on the famous Iron Throne. Costumes of Arya, Jaqen H’ghar and The Waif were also on display. For fans over the age of 21, the Ommegang Beer Bar served samples of Iron Throne Blonde Ale.
Previous Game of Thrones installations to promote the series have included White Walkers invading Belfast, where the show is shot and a VR experience climbing the ice wall at Castle Black. Season six of Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere on 24 April.
