Funding issues for Penwortham Leisure Centre
Penwortham Leisure Centre in Lancashire is under threat of closure unless the town, district and county councils can agree on how best to source the estimated £750,000 investment required to the update the facility.
Plans to build another entrance and a car park to ensure that students at Priory Sports and Technology College - which shares the site and has dual use of the facility - are kept separate from public users has already been approved by South Ribble Council.
However, proposals to construct floodlit tennis and netball facilities and to convert a squash court into changing facilities requires a financial commitment that neither South Ribble Council, Lancashire County Council nor Penwortham Town Council is willing to fully commit.
Discussions between the three levels of government organisation are set to continue. Meanwhile, the planning application will be considered on 19 August.
