Funding boost for Kendal scheme
South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has been awarded nearly £40,000 by English Heritage (EH) for additional work that needs to be carried out as part of the restoration of Greenside Limekiln in Kendal, Cumbria.
The grant includes a contribution to cover the cost of an EH-accredited conservation professional, who will be on hand to supervise work at the kiln, which has been deemed to be at high risk according the heritage organisation's Monuments at Risk register. Work got underway on the restoration of Greenside Limekiln in September 2008 to remove more than 50 trees, as well as other invasive plants in order to fully reveal the structure for the first time in almost a century.
However, the structure was found to have been severely damaged by the plants and required additional work costing £45,000, which will be funded by the EH grant along with a contribution from the council. Funding has also been provided by Kendal Town Council, while discussions are continuing with Kendal Civic Society and the South Lakeland Neighbourhood Forum to obtain further contributions.
SLDC conservation officer, Graham Darlington, said: "This extra funding will now secure the completion of the extensive repair works on site during the next month or so, and allow us to then press on with installing the interpretation features on the site in May. Darlington added that it is hoped that the scheme will be ready to open to the public this summer, subject to weather conditions.
