Free-to-air events panel established
Culture secretary Andy Burnham has announced that a panel will be set up to review which sporting events, such as Wimbledon and the Grand National, should be broadcast for free.
The panel will be made up with people from sports, broadcasting and business backgrounds and includes athlete Colin Jackson, cricketer Angus Fraser and former coach of the England women’s football team Hope Powell – as well as broadcasters Eamonn Holmes and Nick Pollard. Former FA chief David Davies will chair.
“I am delighted that we have secured such a range of expertise and I look forward to working with the panel as the review moves forward over the coming year,” said Davies.
The review will cover three main areas: the principle of having a list, the criteria against which events may be listed and the content of any list itself.
The list of sporting events currently protected – which was compiled in 1998 – includes the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup, the European Football Championship, the FA Cup Final, the Scottish FA Cup Final, The Grand National, The Derby, Wimbledon, the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final and the Rugby World Cup Final.
The panel is expected to report by the second half of the year.
