Fighting child abuse in sport
The UK's first centre for the protection of children in sport has been launched this month.
The Child Protection Sport Unit (CPSU) will advise sporting organisations on introducing and implementing child protection policies, and commission research into child abuse within sport.
The new unit, based at Lord's Cricket Ground, is a partnership between the NSPCC and Sport England, which aims to raise the profile of child protection among sports governing bodies.
The CPSU, established in January 2001, is a key development of the NSPCC FULL STOP campaign to end cruelty to children, and is based at the NSPCC training centre in Leicester.
Trevor Brooking, chair of Sport England, said that sport plays an important role in the lives of young people. 'We have a real responsibility to ensure their experiences are safe and fulfilling,' he said.
The NSPCC already provides the Swimline and Football line, specialist helplines offering advice for those concerned about a child's welfare in sport.
