Explosion! bursts into Hampshire
The fuse has been lit for Explosion! - The Museum of Naval Firepower, which is ready to launch in Gosport later this month. The museum is located on the Solent at Priddy's Hard, the 18th century brick buildings home to the former Navy armaments depot. Explosion! takes visitors on an interactive tour of the history of the site through archives and artefacts such as a recreated locker room, an evocative film show, and actual weapons and machinery found on the site. However, despite being an attraction based on naval artillery, Explosion! manages to tell the human story of those who worked in the area making the weapons, as well as the designers, operators and even victims of the missiles, bombs and gunpowder. Explosion!'s director, Michael Nutt, says that the museum's designer, Event Communications, has focused on the human side of firepower: A difficult subject has been given a human perspective through the stories of those involved in naval firepower. The human dimension of the history comes across through the stories of the designers, makers and targets in the history of naval firepower. It's not just a case of putting a torpedo on display. The £3.5m museum has been funded by the Millennium Commission as part of the £80m Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium Scheme, which includes the Gunwharf Quays leisure development. Explosion! will be launched by Olympic shooter Richard Faulds MBE on 24 March 2001.
