'Enthusiastic' response to Felixstowe plans
Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC) has said that its proposals to revamp Felixstowe Seafront Gardens have been met with "enthusiasm" by residents.
A draft masterplan for the scheme - drawn up by consultants Lanarca - went on public display in July, while the Heritage Lottery Fund has already agreed a first round funding pass through the Parks for People programme. Members of the public were given the chance to spend 'Felixstowe pounds' as part of the consultation, which saw 'money' allocated to five themes such as a heritage trail; interpretation and display; and restoration.
According to the council, the most popular themes were the restoration of key features and planting and ecological diversity. Lanarca will now use views to form a set of design proposals based on the community's needs. SCDC cabinet member for countryside and leisure Mary Neale said: "There has been a lot of support for the restoration project so far, with local people wanting to see the gardens restored to their former Edwardian glory."
A second round funding bid is due to be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund in February 2011.
