England told to improve 2018 bid
FIFA vice-president Jack Warner has warned the team behind England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup that it needs to do more to earn the right to stage the tournament.
Warner, who is also president of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), has accused the English bid of "creeping along" and not making the most of its strengths. According to The Guardian, Warner said: "I think England are creeping along. It's better than standing still but I would have thought they would be galloping by now.
"I have been a FIFA executive committee member for 27 years. I have seen many other bids, and while England has all the attributes to be a worthy host country I am not convinced they are making the most of those attributes." However, addressing delegates at the Leaders in Football event at Stamford Bridge stadium in London, Football Association chair Lord Triesman said that England's bid had learned from its abortive attempt to secure the 2006 event.
Triesman said: "In light of Jack's analysis, may I say a little more about listening. In the 2006 bid, people rightly said that we were out there hectoring people about our right to host the World Cup. It was as crude as it was ineffective. "So we have spent what must seem like a quiet period listening and learning from the football family worldwide. I don't regret that. But I take the point that we now need to put what we have learned to good use as we use our great assets effectively."
