Emslie steps down as Edinburgh Zoo chair
Donald Emslie has resigned as chair of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), following a vote of no confidence by members at an extraordinary general meeting.
Vice chair Manus Fullerton has taken over the role of acting chair of the board of trustees, with Hugh Roberts appointed as interim chief executive with effect from 18 May. Emslie said: "At the EGM on [12 May] and to the media afterwards, I said that I had listened to the members' views, but acknowledged also that I had obligations as a trustee of a charity.
"The correct course of action was for me to discuss with my board what the next step should be, taking into consideration the interests of the RZSS, the views of the members and of OSCR - the charities regulator in Scotland. "I was able to do this at a board meeting on [13 May], during which I informed my fellow trustees that I would resign as chair and allow the board to rebuild the confidence of the members."
It comes after the RZSS announced that it had concluded an investigation into allegations made against Edinburgh Zoo director of business operations Gary Wilson. In a statement, a zoo spokesperson said that Wilson had been subjected to a "malicious smear campaign" but said it had reached the "right conclusion" in clearing Wilson.
