Elephant and Castle leisure plans revealed
Southwark Council and Lend Lease have unveiled plans for the redevelopment of south London's Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre site in the latest round of public consultation.
John McAslan and Partners has been appointed to work in conjunction with leisure design specialists S&P Architects on proposals for a new leisure centre that is to form part of the scheme.
For the first time in more than a decade, the site is set to house a swimming pool as part of the leisure element. A fitness suite, a spin studio and a four-court sports hall are also proposed.
Meanwhile, the development will also comprise a residential tower overlooking the site that has designed by Squire and Partners and will occupy the front of the current leisure centre site.
Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration Fiona Colley said: "For anyone thinking of moving to Elephant and Castle, or those who already live in this buzzing part of central London, this will be welcome news.
"It's easy to see how an enjoyable city lifestyle could be further enhanced by superb leisure facilities, as well as new shopping and recreation opportunities."
It is expected the existing leisure centre will close this summer ahead of the construction of the replacement facility, which is due to open in spring 2014.
