Duty-free French coastal paths
French sentiers douaniers, created in 1791 for customs officers to patrol the French coast in search of smugglers, are being promoted as walking routes by the Direction Départemental de l’Equipement (DDE) in the Manche region.
Of the 438 km of coastline in the La Manche region of Normandy, more than 300 km of sentiers have already been cleared of undergrowth and opened to the public. The ‘sentier littoral’ is marketed both as a fascinating historical trail and an invitation to enjoy the flora and fauna of the coastal land.
The DDE says the opening of the paths is an important supplementary draw for tourism in the region. Leaflets are currently being circulated outlining the history of the douaniers work and showing the parts of the coastline already open or about to be restored for public use.
