Downing unveils plans for London project
A leisure centre and swimming pool is to form part of a new mixed-use development being proposed for Vauxhall, south London, by Liverpool-based property group Downing.
Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the 32-storey tower will incorporate around 580 student bedrooms and will transform a derelict site on South Lambeth Road. The proposed location of the development is identified in the Vauxhall Nine Elms Business Opportunity Area and the London Plan as being suitable for high-rise properties. Under the proposals, the 20m swimming pool will be visible through a glazed frontage onto South Lambeth Road, with it and 10,000sq ft (929sq m) leisure centre open to the public.
Downing development director Paul Houghton said: "Demand for high quality, purpose-built student accommodation far outstrips supply in the capital and we are very pleased to be bringing forward these proposals. "The site is currently underused and could offer so much more to the area. Our proposals will utilise it to its full potential and provide a scheme that will help the local economy and revitalise the street-scene along South Lambeth Road."
