Divers conduct visitor chat-room at Canadian marine centre
A new marine discovery centre at Les Escoumins, Quebec in Canada will enable visitors to interact by “live conversations” with “interpretive divers” on the seabed.
Following a investment boost of $1.5m from the Canadian government and the merging of Canada Economic Development and Parks Canada, the existing Centre des Loisirs Marins at Les Escoumins on the Saguenay St. Lawrence Estuary, will focus on offering visitors the chance to talk to divers while they explore the seabed.
Claude Drouin, secretary of state for Canada Economic Development, said: “The project fully corresponds with our long-term economic development plans of consolidating tourist centres that emphasize the region’s natural and cultural heritage.”
The new centre will offer a daily interpretive programme with naturalist guides; an interactive viewing room; an underwater world exhibition covering 160sq m; a land tour for marine mammal observation; an outdoor amphitheatre; a picnic area and automated food services.
“The North Shore is well known for its natural attractions and tourism plays a vital role in the regional economy”, said Drouin. “In 2001, an estimated 341,000 tourists visited the region, where they spent some $68 million.
The centre will open next summer. Details: www.pc.gc.ca
