Digicel Group to build Port-au-Prince hotel
Marriott International has revealed that it is to operate a new US$45m (£28.8m, EUR33.8m) hotel in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following an agreement with a subsidiary of the Digicel Group.
The Caribbean-based telecommunications group is behind the design and construction of the property, which will be operated under the Marriott Hotels and Resorts Brand.
Marriott signed a management agreement with Unigestion Holding to run the property, which is scheduled to open in mid-2014 and help revitalise the country's economic activity.
Facilities will include a 150sq m (1,614sq ft) fitness centre; a swimming pool; and a sundries shop/marketplace, as well as a lobby bar and lounge; a casual restaurant; and meeting space.
The Digicel Group and Marriott International are working with The Clinton Foundation, with the foundation facilitating access to the Haiti government and national tourism authority.
Former US president Bill Clinton said: "This new hotel project will stand as a symbol of Haiti's recovery, providing much needed jobs to the Haitian people and encouraging foreigners to visit, invest and work in Port-au-Prince.
"My foundation has worked with both Marriott and Digicel, and encouraged them to form this partnership. Their investment proves that Haiti is open for business and on the path to economic recovery."
