Derby sports arena design team named
Derby City Council (DCC) has revealed that Mace has been named as the successful design team that will now go forward to work on the city's proposed new multi-sport arena.
Councillors selected the group following a tender process, with the specification of the venue to be finalised after local residents and sports clubs are given the chance to have their say. It is thought that a 12 badminton court indoor arena will be provided, alongside a 250m cycle track; an indoor climbing centre; and a 150-station fitness and wellness centre.
Two multi-use exercise studios; a spinning studio; and an outdoor road cycling circuit could also feature as part of the arena, which will be able to host concerts with a capacity of 5,000. DCC cabinet member for leisure and culture Hilary Jones said: "We are confident that we have engaged the best design team to deliver a high quality facility and value for money for the people of Derby."
Mace project manager David Grose added: "We need to make the best use of the infield area for recreational sport, competitions, events and concerts, while maximising access to the velodrome to ensure that we create a facility that appeals to international athletes and puts Derby on the sports map." It is anticipated that plans will be submitted in December this year, with construction work due to commence in June 2012. The arena will be scheduled for completion inside two years.
