Lord’s set to host the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup final
Lord’s Cricket Ground will host the final of the 2017 Women’s ICC World Cup as one of the five venues for the tournament.
Leicestershire’s Grace Road, Derbyshire’s 3aaa County Ground, Somerset’s County Ground in Taunton and Gloucestershire’s Bristol County Ground will also host a portion of the 31 matches, which will take place between 26 June and 23 July.
Derbyshire’s 3aaa County Ground is undergoing redevelopment as it prepares for its role in the competition, which will feature eight nations.
England and Wales Cricket Board director of events, Steve Elworthy, said the tournament would “help drive interest and participation in women’s cricket at every level”.
“It’s critical we use this event to reach out to young children in particular, so we’ve moved the tournament start date to earlier in the summer – a decision which will help our host venues encourage attendance by engaging with schools in the build-up to the event,” he added.
The 2017 World Cup will be the first time England has hosted the tournament since 1993, when the hosts beat New Zealand in the final.
Clare Connor, ECB director of women’s cricket, said the introduction of the ICC Women’s Championship – which has a direct impact on qualification for the World Cup – had made the women’s game “more competitive and exciting than before.”
“In this country, last summer’s record-breaking attendances for the Women’s Ashes series showed there is a growing audience and appetite for women’s cricket – we witnessed excellent crowds, including full houses at Chelmsford and Hove, coupled with the growing media and commercial interest,” she added.
