Crawley names its leisure centre
Crawley Borough Council has announced the name of Crawley’s new leisure centre, following the signing of a building contract with London-based Gleeson Group.
The £25m amenities will include an Olympic-size 50m swimming pool, diving facilities, learner and leisure pools, a 12-court sports hall, indoor bowls hall, fitness suite, climbing walls, a bar and a cafeteria.
Councillor Chris Mullins, said: “The new centre needs a more dynamic and interesting name than ‘Crawley Leisure Centre’. We’ve gone for ‘K2 Crawley’, which, in our minds, is perfect.
“It’s strong, young and exiting and it links with the huge climbing wall which forms a prominent feature in the building,” he said.
Work on the centre began this month, and construction is expected to be complete by September 2005.
Sean Foley, from Gleeson, said: “We are very pleased to be given the opportunity to work with Crawley again. The Gleeson project team includes local people and we are all looking forward to producing one of the most prestigious leisure centres in the UK.”
The centre forms a part of a £37m leisure project, which includes the creation of mini leisure centres at the new Ifield and Maidenbower schools, designed for dual use within the community. Details: www.crawley.gov.uk
