Coventry considers scheme to continue Olympic ambassador legacy
Coventry City Council will this month consider whether to provide funding for a scheme to recruit, train and manage volunteers, following the success of the city's ambassadors involved in London 2012.
The ambassadors would welcome visitors to the city at major events and the scheme would be run as a social enterprise by Coventry University.
The council will consider whether to provide £20,000 for the scheme's first year at its cabinet meeting on 15 April.
Last year the Coventry Ambassadors supported the torch relay, 12 matches of Olympic football and the Paralympic Flame Celebration.
Since then the volunteers have also supported the Decathlon Coventry Half-Marathon, Christmas Lights Switch On and the Davis Cup at the Ricoh, providing an equivalent of £208,932 of volunteer time in 2012.
Chair of scrutiny coordination at the council Linda Bingham said: "We developed a great partnership to recruit, train and manage the programme last year, and now Coventry University have got a really exciting proposal for developing the scheme so it becomes a lasting legacy for us all.”
