Council to review Felixstowe theatre's future
Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC) will review the future of Felixstowe's Spa Theatre next month, having revealed in December that it can no longer afford to subsidise the venue.
The cabinet has been asked to look again at its decision to invite proposals from local groups or leisure operators following a meeting of the council's scrutiny committee on 12 January.
Members of the cabinet will now discuss the theatre's future on 7 February, which currently receives £250,000 a year and requires at least £3m to be spent on upgrading its facilities.
SCDC cabinet member for economic development and leisure Geoff Holdcroft has said that he hopes a solution for the Spa Theatre's long-term future can be found next month.
"We want to find a long-term future for the Spa, whether that be with a new local trust running the building or outside established companies with new proposals."
Following December's decision, current operator Openwide Coastal said it will run the Spa Theatre until the end of June as it was not "viable" to continue until October.
