Council to mull Derby museums overhaul
Derby's Museum of Industry and History at Silk Mill is set to be mothballed in March under plans to 'remodel' the city's current museum provision.
The proposal, which forms part of a wider strategy to transform Derby Museums, is set to be considered by Derby City Council (DCC) on 26 October. Closing the Silk Mill attraction aims to save the council around £197,000 a year and would help fund other projects, such as a rolling redevelopment of the City Museum and Art Gallery.
The council is also aiming to redevelop the Silk Mill site into a new major science, technology, engineering and mathematics attraction for the city. A two-year development planning project would be undertaken if the museum proposals are approved in order to revamp Silk Mill - part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Meanwhile the operation of Derby Museums could be moved to a new model, which DCC hopes will be "more entrepreneurial, more commercial and more business focus". A report to go before the council said: "The current state of Derby Museums and the financial context require a radical overhaul of the way museums and heritage services are delivered in the city.
"By adopting this position, the council will deliver a clear and assertive statement that it will take necessary actions to be fiscally responsible, whilst demonstrating new thinking to help realise the museum's, and indeed the city's, potential."
