Council to mull Canterbury facility's future
Canterbury City Council (CCC) is to examine potential new leisure uses for its Kingsmead Leisure Centre, following a scrutiny review of local facilities.
A look into the future of the Canterbury complex was one of a number of recommendations adopted by the local authority's executive on 31 March. According to a report put before the committee, retaining the facility in its current guise is to cost up to £2.96m over a 20-year period and would require continued council investment.
Options to be considered over the coming months include 'decommissioning' the facility's leisure and learn pool and replace swimming provision with a 25m pool elsewhere. Other options include the replacement of the centre's entire swimming element with a range of new uses, such as spa and wellness facilities or a ten-pin bowing alley.
Meanwhile, CCC is also to explore the possibility of implementing a new model of delivery, with a spokesperson confirming that any new contract would start in April 2013.
