Council to defend Rose Bowl legal challenge
Eastleigh Borough Council (EBC) has confirmed that it will defend itself against a judicial review into a decision to invest more than £32m in the redevelopment of the Rose Bowl cricket venue.
Three hotel operators issued the legal challenge against the council, which has reaffirmed its commitment to the project after initially agreeing to provide the funding in December 2009. The proposed £48m redevelopment of the Rose Bowl near Southampton is set to include a 175-bedroom hotel, new covered stands, improved media, catering and hospitality facilities and an extended golf course.
Notice of the intention to serve a judicial review was received by the council on 20 November 2009, but EBC said it is confident it has "acted properly within the law" and expects the scheme to progress. EBC leader Keith House said: "The council has taken the decision to continue with the development at the Rose Bowl. This exciting scheme will provide a major boost to the economy of the whole region and of course provide a superb cricket and conference venue.
"By reaching this decision, the council is committed to defending a judicial review as we believe we have a strong case. I would encourage the three hotel groups to come and talk to us about their concerns for this development and to appreciate the far reaching benefits that this package offers for other local businesses in the area."
