Council backs harbour development plans
Planning officials at Cornwall Council have voted in favour of proposals for a multi-million pound harbour scheme on a site incorporating Battery Rocks beach in Penzance.
The extension of existing harbour facilities and the construction of a new passenger and terminal building form part of the scheme, which aims to improve links between the Isles of Scilly and the UK mainland. In December 2009, the council's strategic area committee voted against the proposals but have now performed a u-turn and given the go-ahead to the development by a majority of two to one.
A Route Partnership, which comprises Cornwall Council, Penwith District Council, the Isles of Scilly Council and the Duchy of Cornwall, is behind the proposals for the harbour development. The scheme, which has attracted strong criticism from local residents, is now due to go before the government for consideration.
