Council backing for Oxfordshire boxing project
South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) has agreed to contribute £206,230 towards efforts to help Berinsfield Boxing Club become a centre of excellence for the sport.
Construction work has now started on a £350,000 extension of the club, which will double the size of existing facilities. When complete, it will boast a training area, a club office, upgraded changing rooms and a recreation zone. In addition to the local authority's contribution, the scheme received a £50,000 grant from the Amateur Boxing Association; £50,000 from Oxfordshire County Council; and £40,000 from the Robin Greaves Sports Foundation.
SODC cabinet member for grants Rodney Mann said: "Berinsfield boxing club has wanted to expand their facilities for many years and so I am very pleased our award of £206, 230, along with the other funding they have secured, will help them achieve this ambition." Berinsfield Boxing Club's Mel Corrigan added: "The extension will make a big difference for everyone who currently uses the club and we hope to attract more members with our excellent new facilities."
