Council announces winning Royal Docks ideas
Four proposals for the regeneration of derelict sites in London's Royal Docks and Canning Town have been announced by Newham Council, following a competition.
Three locations owned by the local authority and the London Development Agency are to be overhauled as part of the proposals, which aims to provide a range of facilities. Last November, London mayor Boris Johnson and Newham mayor Sir Robin Wales helped launch Meanwhile London in a bid to find ideas for the sites.
Winning proposals include Caravanserai for the Canning Town site, which was proposed by EXYST, Space Makers Agency, Ash Sakula and others. Strong and Co's plans for a waterside festival site - 21st Century Pleasure Gardens - was the scheme chosen for the Pontoon Dock site.
Industri[US] - proposed by Fluid with Colliers International, Dare and others - was selected for the Royal Business Park Site. Meanwhile, Studio Egret West's Royal Docks Bath vision for Pontoon Dock has also been chosen despite not forming part of the original competition.
The London-based architects have proposed the use of seven Thames Lighters to provide a floating structure incorporating a swimming pool; a spa; and a café/restaurant. Sir Robin Wales said: "Each of the schemes will undergo further technical evaluation before any formal lease agreements are entered into with the winners, who have all said they are willing to collaborate with other competition entrants."
