Birmingham City University has signed a deal to become one of the anchor tenants of the Alexander Stadium following the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The deal means that in legacy mode, the stadium's Western Stand will be converted to accommodate up to 1,000 students.

The venue, in the city's Perry Barr area, is set to undergo a £72m transformation ahead of the Games, during which it will host all of the athletics competitions.

A full planning application is due for submission shortly with construction work due to start in early 2020.

"Alexander Stadium is an iconic part of Birmingham’s sporting offering, which will take centre stage in the coming years, and it will make a fitting home for our sporting staff and students," said professor Philip Plowden, vice-chancellor at Birmingham City University.

Cllr Ian Ward of Birmingham City Council added: “This exciting new partnership with Birmingham City University brings a new and meaningful purpose for the stadium.

"This deal lays the foundations for further investment to make the revamped Stadium the focal point for community, leisure, sport, health and well-being activity in a regenerated Perry Barr."

Converting the stadium to university use will complement the larger legacy plans for the Games.

The regeneration of the Perry Bar area will include 5,000 homes, 2,000 of them being used for the athletes village during the games.
