Commonwealth Games England plans performance centre for Gold Coast 2018
Commonwealth Games England (CGE) will use part of the £4m (US$5m, €4.5m) grant it received from Sport England to create a performance centre within its Brisbane base ahead of the 2018 Games.
England is gearing up to send 600 athletes and staff for the Gold Coast event – the largest cohort ever to represent the nation in an overseas sporting event.
The 400 athletes win benefit from the performance centre and a “full programme of support services” ahead of and during the Games, with the aim of replicating the performance centre that was used ahead Glasgow 2014.
A Team England preparation camp will give athletes 10 days to acclimatise and train. A number of “specially selected high-performance sports facilities” will be used, while the camp will feature a full team of medical physio and support staff.
Ian Metcalfe, chair of CGE, said “no stone has been left unturned” in the pursuit of good training venues.
CGE chief executive Paul Blanchard added: “The facilities that we are creating for our athletes will give Team England the best chance of delivering more success for the nation at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
"We believe that the athletes will be the best prepared team ever to represent England at a Commonwealth Games.”
