Cold War still attractive in UK
Realising that disposals and sales programmes by the government might result in their destruction, English Heritage has been running a conservation selection process into Britain’s historic Cold War defence installations.
Already scheduled have been the former Royal Observer Corps HQ at York and the 1980’s Cruise Missile shelters at Berkshire’s Greenham Common.
The list is also expected to include facilities associated with Britain’s V-bomber force, a key element of the UK’s nuclear deterrent policy from the late 1950s to 1960s.
However, the extent of the UK’s cold war infrastructure of air bases, missile sites, command centres and underground bunkers makes it unlikely that much of it will be turned into visitor attractions. Details: www.english-heritage.org.uk
