Chef's plans to create Sunset Strip in Mayfair fall apart
Marco Pierre White's plans to take over three venues in Mayfair have been shelved after rows with the landlord, reports the Evening Standard.
Six months ago, he and business partner Piers Adam announced their intention to transform Swallow Street into a Sunset Strip of clubs and restaurants, but will not now be taking over Bentley's seafood restaurant, the Swallow Street Bar or the Opal Lounge.
The news comes just weeks after two of his most famous restaurants, Oak Room and Titanic, closed with millions of pounds in losses. Last week it also emerged that he has resigned as a director of the Mirabelle because he is bored with company affairs and wants to concentrate on the creative side of the restaurant business.
The Mirabelle, which White still owns - along with the Criterion, the Belvedere, Quo Vadis, Drones and L'Escargot - has accumulated £10m worth of debt in bank loans and investment, but showed a net profit of £713,000 last year.
White retired from being a chef three years ago and recently became a partner in London's Planet Hollywood. Details: +44(0)20 7240 4721
