Changes in training criteria for spa therapists in Singapore
A change in the law affecting spa operators in Singapore comes into force today - one which is less demanding and more attainable.
As from 1 April, category one spa operators must ensure that 50% of all therapists working for them are SODESCO, ITEC or CIBTEC qualified. Previously, under criteria set out by the Spa Association of Singapore, 70% of therapists needed to meet this standard.
Operators are welcoming the revised decision, on the grounds that even the most reputable spas in Singapore had struggled to meet previous standards.
In Singapore, spa operators can apply to become a category one spa, which differentiates them from health centres, massage parlours and salons which claim to offer spa services.
To be classed as category one, a spa must be a member of the Spa Association of Singapore and ensure that all staff wear a uniform, as well as complying to the 50% qualified therapists rule.
