Castleford Tigers Rugby Football Club’s plans to build a new stadium in Glasshoughton, West Yorkshire, have received final approval.

Wakefield Council had already approved the planning application for the £135m Five Towns Park development, but the sheer size of the project meant any final approval was subject to review by central government.

With the expiry of the judicial review period yesterday (28 September), the plans have now cleared their final hurdle.

Developed by Lateral Property Group, the plans for the Five Towns Park project include a new 10,000-capacity community stadium for the Tigers, along with a 50-acre country park and a 53,000sq m retail and entertainment complex – creating around 2,000 new jobs in the area.

Lateral is working with Leeds-based construction company GMI on the project and other partners in the development include architects DLA Design, HOW Planning and landscape architects Tyler Grange.

Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council welcomed the news: “It’s not just a great day for Castleford Tigers, but a great day for the town of Castleford.

“It’s going to help with the regeneration of the town, it’s also going to create new jobs and opportunities for local people, so all in all it’s a red letter day.”
