Carnival holds fast on takeover bid despite EU objections
Carnival intends pushing ahead with its £3.7bn hostile takeover of P&O Princess Cruises, despite objections from Europe's main competition regulator.
Carnival, which is fighting off rival Royal Caribbean Cruises for control of P&O Princess has received a statement of objections from the European Commissions competition division.
It is believed that the Commission may require Carnival to sell some of its assets before a deal can progress. The company owns six cruise brands including Cunard Line, operating a fleet of 43 cruise ships.
According to the BBC, Carnival says it will not consider disposing of Cunard Line but it will consider, after the merger, hoisting a 'for sale' sign over P&O Princess's UK arm.
The company has around a month to give a response to the Commission's objections and is not commenting on its predicament. Details: www.carnival.com
