Camperdown Wildlife Centre scoops honour
Camperdown Wildlife Centre in Dundee has been congratulated by the zoo world following a prestigious awards ceremony held at Dublin Zoo and attended by over 80 people.
The award from the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) was in recognition of pioneering work on an event with the new brown bear enclosure.
It highlights Camperdown's efforts in educating the public in a dedicated event.
An interactive preview of its new European brown bear enclosure allowed visitors to experience all of the new facilities before the bears moved in.
Camperdown Wildlife Centre was competing against zoos throughout Britain and was one of 24 to receive a commendation.
Held annually for over a decade, the BIAZA awards recognise outstanding contributions and achievements in the fields of wildlife conservation, advances in animal welfare and husbandry, sustained breeding programmes, marketing, PR, education, research, enclosure design and individual outstanding achievement.
Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Councillor Charles Farquhar said: "This award shows the commitment and dedication of staff to providing a facility that can compete with the larger zoos within the UK. In this particular category, we were up against London, Bristol and Paignton Zoos. The wildlife centre is a credit to Dundee."
