Butlins opens new spa hotel in Bognor
Butlins has opened a new hotel and spa at its resort in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.
The £20m Ocean Hotel covers seven storeys, linked by 'Disco' lifts to colour coded bedroom corridors to help children find their way around, and offers 200 rooms in a variety of configurations. These include the Atlantis, Mariner, Neptune and Compass Rooms, all featuring colour change lighting, rainfall showers, private balconies and either sea or South Downs views, plus what Butlins calls a world first 'no monsters under the bed' guarantee for children, with blue glow underbed lighting. Both the Atlantis and Mariner Rooms incorporate a separate children's den.
The hotel's 670sq m Ocean Spa, designed by Klafs, offers public areas in shades of purple, pink, orange, yellow and lime green in addition to a sauna, steam room, snow cave, heated loungers, foot spas, disco showers and an outdoor hot tub. There are ten private treatment rooms, all featuring laserpods. In addition to facials, massages and body scrubs, the spa offers a range of specialist treatments exclusive to Butlins, supplied by London-based Spa Find. These include the Beauty and the Beach exfoliating treatment for women, offered in a specially created treatment room with SAD lighting, 25 degree heating and seagull calls designed to help relax the mind as well as the body. For men there is the football-themed Hat Trick Massage, expectant mums can enjoy the Beautiful Beginnings ritual, and for the ultimate indulgence the Touch of Gold Magnificent Mineral Facial incorporates a face mask encrusted with flakes of real gold.
Richard Bates, Butlins MD, said: "Our specialist treatments turn the traditional spa experience on its head - we're the Heston Blumenthal of the spa world!" Meal provision at the hotel comes courtesy of the Kaleidoscope restaurant and bar, which offers the options of a buffet and carvery, a fresh fish bar or something cooked to order in a clay oven or on a wok burner.
The new opening is part of a near-£100m investment over 6 years by Butlins across its three UK sites, Bognor, Minehead in Somerset and Skegness in Lincolnshire. Design was by Newman Gauge - which also worked on Butlins' Shoreline Hotel - and the architects were PWP Architects Ltd.
