Herne Hill Velodrome - the last surviving venue from the London 1948 Olympic Games - is facing a brighter future after the terms of a new 15-year lease agreement were agreed.

Site owner Dulwich Estates has reached a deal with British Cycling to enable work to start on the resurfacing of the venue's track, which is expected to take place this summer. In February, the national governing body announced that concept designs for the work had been drawn up by Mike Taylor of Hopkins, the architects behind the 2012 velodrome.

A campaign group - Save the Velodrome - will now look to raise funds required to revamp the wider site, complementing repair work to be funded and overseen by British Cycling. British Cycling chief executive officer Ian Drake said: "This should give a real boost to the Save the Velodrome campaign and they can now focus on raising funds for a new pavilion.

"A lot of work still remains to be done but we are optimistic that the future of Herne Hill Velodrome will be secured for the benefit of cycling in the capital." Image: silverfox09/flickr
