Blue plaque for Cambridge pub
Cambridge's16th century Greene King Eagle pub is to gain a Cambridge Blue Plaque to honour the discovery 50 years ago of deoxyribonucleic acid - DNA.
The unveiling of the plaque, marking the start of DNA:50 Years of the Double Helix celebrations in the city, commemorates the site where Francis Crick and James Watson made the announcement of their discovery of the human genetic code.
Working in Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory, the two men burst into the pub and declared that they had discovered the secret of life.
The discovery turned out to be the 20th century's biggest scientific advance and sparked the beginning of the biotechnology industry.
The blue plaque initiative is part of a scheme launched in 2001 to acknowledge the people and events associated with the city which have made a significant impact on life in Cambridge or the wider world. Details: www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk
