'Big Freeze' funding for Scottish cultural sector
A number of cultural organisations in Scotland are to be awarded additional funding in a bid to compensate for increased costs or losses caused by the inclement weather in late 2010.
Scottish culture minister Fiona Hyslop has confirmed that a total of £362,000 has been made available from the 2010-11 Culture Budget in order to support the sector. Creative Scotland has been awarded £250,000 to support theatres across the country that saw a "significant impact" on attendances as a result of the poor weather.
Royal Scottish National Orchestra (£100,000); Scottish Ballet (£30,000); the Scottish Mining Museum (£4,000); and National Galleries of Scotland (£20,000) are among the recipients. Meanwhile, Scottish Chamber Orchestra has secured £8,000 to mitigate lost ticket sales and the National Library of Scotland has been awarded £40,000 to keep premises free of ice.
